Following the sad passing of Queen Elizabeth II, Charles automatically became King. He will be proclaimed monarch at a historic Accession Council on Saturday, September 10.
The council is presided over by the Lord President of the council, Penny Mordaunt, who has ministerial responsibility for the Privy Council Office. Ms Mordaunt was appointed this position and Leader of the House of Commons on September 6, 2022, in Liz Truss's new cabinet, replacing Nottinghamshire MP Mark Spencer.
The meeting will begin with the Lord President announcing the death of the sovereign and calling upon the Clerk of the Council to read aloud the text of the Accession Proclamation. This will include the title chosen by Charles, which is King Charles III.
