Arizona Sen. Wendy Rogers got a restraining order against a reporter who was asking questions about whether she was following the law on residency.

Wendy Rogers always has been a hard-edged conservative political candidate. Lately, her rhetoric has grown bolder — and meaner.A court should overturn a restraining order filed against a Phoenix reporter who is investigating whether an Arizona politician is following the law by living in the district she represents, First Amendment attorneys and journalism leaders say.

"We've always known that the only way to protect free speech and a free press is to not have the courts play a significant role in regulating it. Anything that becomes kind of licensure or regulation of the media just ends up putting the power in the hands of government to control what a reporter is doing. And that's absolutely offensive to the First Amendment."

The injunction, signed by Flagstaff Justice Court Magistrate Judge Amy Criddle, forbids Sanchez from going to any of Rogers' homes. Rogers posted Ring doorbell photographs of Sanchez ringing a doorbell and standing in front of one of the homes, writing on social media that Sanchez was"stalking" her and that her behavior was"bizarre."

Greg Burton, executive editor for The Arizona Republic, called the judge’s order “an outrageous violation of press freedoms.” Criddle could have delayed the injunction order for 10 days and scheduled a hearing in which Sanchez and the Capitol Times could have defended the reporter’s actions. The law says a judge is supposed to review the petition for an injunction for evidence of harassment and decide whether to grant the injunction immediately.
