The Seven Stars Cruise Train is heralded as “The Most Luxurious, Relaxing train in Japan,” surely it’s the most exclusive. As it slinks through lush surroundings on a winding mountain route in the southern island of Kyusu, fans of the train wait for it to arrive at local stations, with some even following it stop-by-stop on a weekly basis.
“The Seven Stars travels through our beloved land of Kyushu and is supported by the wonderful smiles and warm hospitality of the residents in each region” proclaims the booking website. A beloved pastime in Japan, avid train-watchers are known as “railfans.” The passionate community is as committed as any fandom and no train is more well-known than the Seven Stars.
Operating since 2013, bookings have only recently been opened to western tourists. Currently, the waiting list to right the sought after slow-rolling cruise train is over 200 people long, and calls for regular lottery drawings to determine ticket sales.The train departs from the Hakata station in Fukuoka, Kyushu’s largest city.
Shifting stops in small towns and villages along the way provide enriching excursions into unique Japanese cultural history. For example, one regular stop, Arita, known as the porcelain city, is where ceramic was first created in Japan over 400 years ago. Factories centuries years old still line the small town implementing the traditional techniques to produce pearly porcelain, the very same used to craft the Seven Star’s sinks.
In celebration of the Seven Star’s 7th anniversary, special anniversary journey routes are planned offering riders “travel to discover a new way of life,” including a tour to Ukiha, to enjoy the beautiful cherry blossoms before a nostalgic 2-day journey into the purity of Japanese serenity.
