Kennedy during a dinner in New York last week said there is an “argument” that COVID-19 is “ethnically targeted,” falsely saying COVID-19 is “targeted to attack Caucasians and Black people” while sparing Ashkenazi Jewish people and Chinese people.
Organizations advocating for Jewish and Asian people immediately criticized presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. after he spread a conspiracy theory at an event last week about the groups and COVID-19.
The term Ashkenazi is generally used to refer Jewish people whose ancestors lived in parts of Europe. The majority of American JewsTed Deutch, CEO of the American Jewish Committee, on Saturday tweeted that Kennedy’s comments are “deeply offensive and incredibly dangerous.” “Every aspect of his comments reflects some of the most abhorrent antisemitic conspiracy theories throughout history and contributes to today’s dangerous rise of antisemitism,” Deutch shared.
He added that Kennedy’s false comments “also pose a threat to individuals of Chinese descent who have already faced unjust and dangerous vilification due to COVID.”
