'A great leader can connect the existing dots that foreshadow the inevitable.'
Diane Bryant is a former COO for Google Cloud and is now in an advisory board position at OWNZONES.Diane Bryant is no stranger to the tech industry. She worked at chip giant Intel for over thirty years, most recently as the president of the company's data center group. That was followed by a short stint at Google, where she focused on scaling its Cloud platform against fierce competition from Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure.
JM: You recently exited the chief operating officer role at Google Cloud. In the role, you had the challenge of growing Google's cloud business to catch up with competitors, including Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure. What's the one lesson you learned while you were at Google? How have you applied that to all your advisory and board positions?DB: Google is an exceptional company filled with the many of the world’s brightest innovators.
The first limiter of every start-up I’ve advised is talent. The ideas are plentiful, the funding is available, the market is ripe. Talent is the scarcity. The best leaders attract the best talent. A leader’s job is to be a strong and compelling communicator of the vision and path to success, and then create meaningful and fulfilling opportunities for the employee to contribute and develop.
A visionary is someone that sees the future before everyone else. A great leader can connect the existing dots that foreshadow the inevitable. Clearly, identifying those dots is the first critical step. The second step is connecting them and predicting the future outcome, opportunity and risk. The third step is having the courage to act and inspire others to follow.

Diane Keaton Walks a Tight Line Between Gleefully Single and Extremely HornyDiane Keaton is a wonderful spirit, but I worry about her from time to time. Keaton has said she has no friends, that she fancies herself the oldest single woman in America, and most recently, that she does not “mwah-mwah” (I have to assume here that means kissing). In a recent interview with InStyle, Keaton vehemently denied that she goes on dates. (Keaton is 73.) “Let’s just get that straight,” she said, and I cannot tell the tone of this statement, obviously—that is one of the drawbacks of the written word—but imagining Keaton uttering those words to me sent chills down my spine. “That one’s important. I haven’t been on a date in, I would say, 35 years. No dates.”
