The one-woman production from Rotem Nachmany opens at Houston's Mildred's Umbrella Sept. 16.
During infertility treatments, a lot of personal defining moments happen in bathrooms. Israeli writer and actress Rotem Nachmany sets “Scrambled,” the tale of her personal journey to conceive, in one, writing on the floor and psyching herself up by affirming her beauty and strength.
The one-woman show kicks off Mildred’s Umbrella Theater’s 2022-2023 season with a bang. Nachmany debuted “Scrambled” in 2019 and has since performed it all over the world in both her native Hebrew and in English. Part black comedy, part cathartic expulsion of personal pain, “Scrambled” lays bare a facet of medical experience that’s often overlooked.
“The issue of fertility problems is not discussed much, I guess, because it is related to very intimate and female organs,” she says. “The feeling that accompanied me in the first year of the treatments was a great shame. I felt like a spoiled woman. A woman who fails to do the most natural thing. In addition to the difficult feelings in front of my partner, my family, in front of myself and in front of the world.
