Hotel Terrestre is the newest development in Punta Pájaros, a quiet stretch of beach set about an hour north of Puerto Escondido on the Pacific Coast of Oaxaca.

As he tells me how Hotel Terrestre came to be, two black dogs appear on the deck, both panting in the balmy seaside air. One of them settles near my feet. I ask Gaeta if he knows the dogs. He says no, but they’re still at home here.
