This year’s Oscars ceremony restored some of the show’s past grandeur—by, mostly, embracing traditional instincts.
, who up until this weekend wasn’t slated to perform, gave us some of her hallmark, delightfully over-egged dramatics, while, in many ways a tribute to the late Chadwick Boseman. We will probably never again see the full blare of corny, ludicrous theater that defined the Oscars of old, but this year at least sought to create a holistic sensory experience. They weren’t so concerned with being cool.

Perhaps the worst technical aspect of the evening was the routine extreme closeups on presenters and nominees, a strange and claustrophobic choice.
The show’s dedication to brevity also began to grate as the evening went on. I didn’t love having the supporting actor categories bunched together, and I missed having actual presenters introduce each best picture nominee. I get that it’s hard to do that when there are ten films in the category, but the rushed clip reels that played after commercials made the nominees in the evening’s headline bout seem like toss-off afterthoughts.
