Sunday, Dec. 7, 1941, by all accounts, was a clear, pleasant day in Honolulu, on the island of Oahu, Hawaii.Just before 8 a.m. on Dec. 7, 1941, the Imperial Japanese Navy attacked the U.S. Navy base at Pearl Harbor, killing 2,403 military personnel and civilians and injuring 1,178 more people. The day after the attack, the United States declared war on Japan and entered into World War II.
The battleship USS Arizona belches smoke as it topples over into the sea during a Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii on Dec. 7, 1941. In a speech to a joint session of Congress a day after the attack, President Franklin D. Roosevelt said Dec. 7, 1941, was "a date which will live in infamy." The attack brought the U.S. into World War II. “Japan declared war upon the United States today. An electrified Nation immediately united for a terrific struggle ahead.
“Shortly after the Hawaiian bombings became known, the Tokyo government announced that Japan had entered a state of war with the United States and Great Britain as of 6 a.m. tomorrow.” ‘We are now in this war. We are all in it – all the way. Every single man, woman and child is a partner in the most tremendous undertaking of our American history.’‘We are going to win the war and we are going to win the peace that follows.’‘We have suffered a serious setback in Hawaii. Our forces in the Philippines, which include the brave people of that Commonwealth, are taking punishment but are defending themselves vigorously.
I can say with utmost confidence that no Americans today or a thousand years hence, need feel anything but pride in our patience and our efforts through all the years toward achieving a peace with the Pacific which would be fair and honorable to every nation, large or small.
