The Richmond resident, 72, had been dealing with pain in his right knee since early 2022. When he entered the U.S. Open lottery, he hoped to avoid surgery until after the tournament, but the pain became too much to bear.
Those advancements — including robotic-assisted surgery — helped Torrence recover more quickly and with less pain after the procedure. He spent three nights in the hospital after his 2012 surgery, but this time, he returned home the same day. Physical therapy helped him resume light work on the pickleball court in six weeks.
“It was a little bit of a risk to do his knee replacement so close to his U.S. Open tournament,” Doherty said. “But ultimately, you just kind of get a feeling for patients, what they’re capable of and what they’re going to be able to accomplish.” They also play at Club 0-0-Two, a private pickleball club in Richmond owned by Wendi and Tom Myers. Wendi Myers is Torrence’s coach, while Tom is his doubles partner for the U.S. Open. Betsy Torrence will also be competing in the tournament in women's doubles.
Torrence hoped to put the surgery off for as long as possible. He said his first knee replacement in 2012 “wasn’t a bad experience,” but he needed to spend three nights in the hospital. Not all patients with chronic knee pain will choose to have surgery; some will live with the pain if it doesn’t change their quality of life, Doherty said. Torrence opted for surgery because it was keeping him from playing pickleball.
