The trend concerns Dr. Kia Parsi, executive director of the Texas A&M Rural and Community Health Institute, who noted that“Rural communities in Texas are the backbone of so much of our economy,” he said. “We’re talking about resources with agriculture, with oil and gas. “I think that’s part of the misconception out there, that somehow because of federal funding, hospitals are in pretty good shape,” said John Hawkins, CEO and president of the Texas Hospital Association.Hospitals have made more money every year since the start of the pandemic. Still, revenue has not kept pace with expenses, according to the Kaufman Hall study, which analyzed financial data from a sample of more than 60 Texas hospitals.
