Scott Paxman with the Weber Basin Water Conservancy District said East Canyon Reservoir could spill over in the coming weeks, while parts of Weber County are bracing for potential flooding.
Scott Paxman, Weber Basin Water Conservancy District general manager, says East Canyon Reservoir is absorbing more water than it can release.| May 2, 2023, 12:30 a.m.After water spilled into the road through Ogden Canyon, a local water manager told The Salt Lake Tribune it could be weeks before the water lowers.
He said East Canyon Creek is limited on how much water it can carry without flooding. Paxman said the water district is limited to releasing about 300 cubic feet of water per second, “and there’s probably over 1,000 cubic feet per second coming into the reservoir right now.” Early this morning, Weber Fire District, Weber County Sheriff's Office, Utah Highway Patrol, Weber County Roads Department, and Ogden City Fire Department were dispatched to reports of flooding across the road in Ogden Canyon. Upon arrival, they determined that the road had not been compromised and that the cause of the flooding was due to mountain runoff and a blockage in the drainage system. Crews worked to clear the blockage and restore the flow of water.
