Escondido Union did not publicly identify the books when it removed them, but requests by The San Diego Union-Tribune reveal they were 'This Book Is Gay' and 'Looking for Alaska'
Last month the Escondido Union School District shut down all libraries at its 23 elementary and middle school campuses for more than a week after it received a complaint from a middle-school parent about one book. The district removed that book — plus one more book after conducting an internal review — without telling parents the books' titles.
School librarians look for books that have literary merit and provide insight into students' lived experiences, Pentland said. What is considered appropriate for a child can be highly subjective depending on the person, Pentland said. So school libraries should consult book reviews and lists by professional librarians and publications, which often list recommended age ranges, experts said.
