Despite Dakota Johnson’s best efforts, ‘Persuasion’ is a flimsy spin on the classic novel.
, it weaves the vernacular of today with the sitting-room plot twists of Austen’s book, striding through its romantic intrigue with a contemporary sensibility. Or, at least, an attempt at one.
But that visual refinement only further highlights the film’s flimsy script, makes it sound that much more out of tune. This is ain which Anne and her family discuss a “5 in London” being the equivalent of a “10 in Bath,” looks-wise. Anne mentions a playlist made for her by a scorned lover, navy man Frederick Wentworth, then produces a stack of sheet music. Get it? Wentworth is referred to, several times, as Anne’s “ex.
Though I wish their ultimate reunion arrived with more grandeur than it does in this breezy film. An Austen adaptation need not be laden with pathos in order for a viewer to feel something at the end. But there ought to be a sense of true and even hard-won accomplishment, one built to with gradual and thoughtful plot turns and precise character development. Thisis too concerned with not being stuffy or boring to allow for any of that slow and careful growth.
