Weekly numbers report shows there is still plenty of COVID-19 going around
San Diego County’s first day since mid-December without a mask mandate didn’t appear to produce a dramatic change in public places.
Montserrat Subia, 31, was working at a women’s clothing store with a sign stating that masks were still preferred while guests are shopping, but she said it’s not uncommon for people to ignore the request or make snarky comments about it.“Most of the customers that will come in here without a mask put us off a little bit because we know it’s not easy to wear a mask,” Subia said.
There were 709 COVID-related hospitalizations at all non-military medical centers across the region Tuesday. That’s still more than anyone would like, but only a little over half of the Omicron peak, which hit 1,348 on Jan. 21, according to county records. About half of those who wandered the mall Wednesday had masks, about the same proportion as was visible in the same location two weeks ago.At Nomad Donuts on University Avenue, about half of all customers donned a mask before going inside to order their donuts, coffees and bagels.
On the patio, Alexis Romo, 27, was working on her laptop during a visit to San Diego with her sister for a conference. The Long Beach resident said that regardless of whether a mask mandate has been in place, she has continued to wear one indoors and in crowds throughout the pandemic, despite being vaccinated and boosted against COVID-19.
