A key House committee is set to advance a sweeping package of gun reforms today, marking the first legislative responses to the school shooting in Uvalde as Democrats gear up to push a slate of new gun laws through the chamber in the coming weeks.

“We are in a crisis of death. We have a war on the children of America,” U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, a Houston Democrat who is among the top members on the committee, said. “Shame on us if we can’t move legislation now.” “Democrats have rushed to a markup today in what seems more like political theater than a real attempt at improving public safety or finding solutions,” U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan, an Ohio Republican, said.The vote is intended to show urgency on the part of Democrats as they aim to pressure Republicans into acting on guns after an 18-year-old gunman killed 21 people, including 19 children, in Uvalde, sparking cries for new restrictions on firearms.
