This former healthcare CEO explains why hospitals need to take more non-COVID patients: ForbesFrontlines

Broadly shutting down the health system has also severely impacted employment. Amidst a pandemic, one might think that hospitals across the country are clamoring for more healthcare workers. Instead, the number of unemployed healthcare workers is on a steep rise. In March alone, 43,000 lost their jobs, and thousands more were furloughed. As a former CEO of a large healthcare system, I know how quickly these problems can escalate.

The financial impact to large regional healthcare systems, the backbone of the American healthcare system, is potentially devastating. Some privately report losses in the tens of millions to hundreds of millions each week. Those projections will likely jump to billions if changes are not made quickly. Early indications of that are already there: Kaiser Permanente, one of the largest and most established organizations, recently secured a $2.4 billion line of credit.

However, the hard reality is that no amount of financial aid from Washington or increased lines of credit can reverse the growing losses across our entire healthcare system. Bankruptcy is also not the answer. The only answer is for the healthcare system to cure itself. The good news is we can quickly change this course. Our public health and political leaders should begin by reassuring Americans that hospitals and clinics are safe places. Health systems need to reinforce their safety measures, delineating separate facilities and care teams for COVID-19 patients. They must communicate to patients that stringent infection control procedures are in place, in part by starting routine testing for caregiver staff as well as admitted patients.
