A disabled Irish traveler had to make his own way off a plane when assistance was late to come, and a new access bill is introduced in Washington.
The Mobility Aids On Board Improve Lives and Empower All Act would require all airlines operating through U.S. airports to publish the dimensions of the cargo holds on their planes. It would also put increased scrutiny on mobility device mishandling incidents and develop a roadmap to study the feasibility of accommodating disabled passengers and their mobility devices in the cabin.
“As a frequent flyer whose wheelchair is regularly broken or damaged, I understand firsthand how deeply frustrating it is that our aviation system still fails to make sure every passenger with a disability is treated with dignity and respect,” Duckworth said in a statement. “It’s long past time we make flying easier and more accessible for the millions of Americans with disabilities who travel by air each year.
Mobility devices are often tailored to their users, so there’s no standardized sizing. However, knowing the dimensions of potential storage areas could help travelers plan ahead. While Duckworth’s bill would primarily affect domestic airlines and flight operations within the U.S., mobility device incidents are a global issue for disabled travelers.that Adrian Keogh, who uses a wheelchair, was forced to crawl off a Ryanair flight in Sweden because of a delay in airport assistance when he landed.
"This is not the first time I've been stuck on a plane after everyone else has disembarked," Keogh told the BBC."It's unacceptable – all I ask for is to be able to travel with dignity."Throughout 2023, USA TODAY is taking a close look at incidents of airlines mishandling mobility devices. According to the Department of Transportation, carriers damage about 1.5% of the mobility devices they transport, which typically translates to about 1,000 incidents per month.
