'A collective responsibility': Fire authorities share fire safety information at Tierrasanta town hall [Breaking]
One of the best ways to prepare for the threat of wildfire in San Diego County is to have an evacuation plan, fire officials say. But not only is it important to have your own plan, knowing the neighbors’ plans — particularly if they are elderly or disabled — can help save lives.“Know your neighborhood, know who lives next door, know who lives across the street from you,” said San Diego Fire-Rescue Department Capt. Alma Lowry, at a recent town hall meeting in Tierrasanta.
Some attendees said they were given only a few minutes notice that their neighborhoods were being evacuated, and they were stuck in traffic for hours as they tried to drive to safer areas. Fire authorities have said for years that they have made significant improvements in how they respond to fire emergencies. Many of those improvements are in the areas of fire equipment, fire organization and communication with residents as well as among different agencies and governments.
