We speak to ABlackLadySketchShow production designers Cindy Chao and Michele Yu discuss creating the look of Robin Thede’s hilarious HBO comedy show, as well as their work on the upcoming AmericanBornChinese:
A Black Lady Sketch Show has returned to HBO for a fourth season. Season 4 of Robin Thede’s hilarious sketch series promises more laughs, more wild scenarios, and more guest stars including Yvette Nicole Brown and Sam Richardson. The Emmy-nominated show more than holds its own against the best HBO comedies, with sketches like “No Makeup”, “Bad B**** Support Group”, and “Courtroom Kiki” racking up millions of views on YouTube.
Cindy Chao: [When] Michele and I started, it was just the two of us working art department. Because it was just the two of us, we were very hands-on in the process of conceptualizing ideas, drawing designs, [and] going on location scouts. Because of that organic process, that's normally how we work on bigger shows like A Black Lady Sketch Show. I wouldn't say we define our skills for each project; it kind of just comes naturally, and we're both very involved from beginning to end.
She's also doing so many things on the show. She's wearing every hat possible, so she can't be there for every detail, and that's not the way anybody would want to work, anyway. She lets us come to the table with our ideas, [and]he is able to very quickly gut-check whether our ideas fit in with what the picture should be for the show [in] the long term. It's really quick once we're in prep with her. We traditionally don't have a lot of time to prep this.
I read that you converted a hospital room for the "Funeral Ball" sketch. How often are you taking a space and totally changing it to suit the show?Michele Yu: There are certain locations that we're augmenting and choosing clearly because they work for the schedule already, like the manger this season. That standing set easily turned into a Bethlehem set.
I want to ask quickly about American Born Chinese. How do you approach that after something like this, and how much do you draw from the source material?
