As heavier monsoon storms start to hit later in the month and into early August, the activity begins to drop off pretty sharply at that point, Garcia said.

In fact, fires caused by lightning are the most common around that time. But when"those kinds of fires do come through, they come with rain so we have a lot more small fires than we do large ones," Garcia said. "The grass that is now dry becomes vegetation to burn, which are set to impact our desert communities. You just look around as you travel through the Valley, you see how much grass has grown in our open spaces," Garcia said.

Though fires like the Telegraph Fire, the Woodbury Fire and the Bush Fire impacted"rural wildland" over the last couple years, the truth is anywhere with open space and dry vegetation is susceptible to wildfire, Garcia said. A red flag warning was issued for southeast Arizona on Feb. 15. Red flag warnings "alert fire managers on federal lands to conditions that are highly unfavorable for prescribed burns and that may lead to especially dangerous wildfire growth," according to the National Weather Service.
