From Maul to Palpatine, here are eight things in the Star Wars prequel trilogy that were always good about the heavily criticized films.
The perception of the Star Wars prequels has improved over the years, yet that are elements in the trilogy that were always good. The first Star Wars movie in 16 years, Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace promised to tell Darth Vader’s origin story while showing the Jedi at the height of their power. However, despite some familiar locations like Tatooine, The Phantom Menace and the prequels as a whole looked and felt significantly different from the original trilogy.
While it seemed like no Star Wars villain would ever come close to being as impressive as Darth Vader, Maul was arguably as visually impactful as his predecessor was – if not more. An alien warrior with devilish horns wielding a double-bladed red lightsaber and hunting the Jedi was the perfect choice for Star Wars’ “first Sith” – neither Vader nor the Empire had ever been referred to as Sith on the big screen – and set the stage for a series of other great prequel-era villains.
Attack of the Clones’ "Across the Stars" set the tone for Episode II’s love story, and it helped sell Anakin and Padmé’s relationship almost better than the visuals themselves. "Battle of the Heroes" could have been an uninspired "Duel of the Fates" rehash, but instead brought something unique to the prequel trilogy, making Anakin and Obi-Wan’s battle in Revenge of the Sith even more tragic as a result.
Ewan McGregor's Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney+’s Obi-Wan Kenobi may have led to a better appreciation of Hayden Christensen’s Anakin Skywalker, but Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan Kenobi was always a highlight of the Star Wars prequels. Unlike Anakin’s character, which struggled with how Lucas wanted to portray a young, reckless Jedi who would one day become Darth Vader due to defining flaws, Obi-Wan was written as the perfect Jedi from the start.
