Here are eight movies widely considered good by critics and audiences that come from directors with otherwise largely divisive film credits.

Even largely divisive directors can have some more consensus "good" movies. From Clerks to Boyz N the Hood, these widely acclaimed films are often made at the start of a director’s career and become springing points for more ambitious and controversial projects. Universally praised films may be due to a unique collaboration, studio pressure, or a rare connection with the cultural zeitgeist, but some of these favorite films come from filmmakers who often have more disputed credits.

The psychological thriller premiered to good reviews, but a strong audience reception led to The Sixth Sense becoming the second-highest-grossing film of 1999. The film introduced audiences to Shyamalan’s signature twist endings, and “I see dead people” became one of the most popular movie quotes of all time.

6 Clerks Director Kevin Smith’s debut may be his most personal and highly regarded film. Clerks was praised for its realism, witty dialogue, and colorful cast of characters and won awards at the Cannes and Sundance Film Festival. The black-and-white comedy’s celebration of slackers had its finger on the pulse of pop culture and it became a cult classic that earned 10 times its budget.

4 Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Written by Charlie Kauffman and directed by Michel Gondry, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is often hailed as one of the best films of its decade. The science fiction romance depicts two peoples’ rediscovery of love for one another after they separately undergo procedures to erase each other from their memories.
