Fans may hope for an official release of the original trilogy's theatrical cuts, but 8 Star Wars special edition changes will never be reversed.
George Lucas made several changes to the original Star Wars trilogy over the years, and while fans would welcome an official release of the theatrical cuts, eight special edition changes are unlikely to ever be reversed. Jon Favreau recently indicated that he doesn't believe Disney will ever release the theatrical versions of the films, instead sticking with Lucas' special editions.
7 Greedo Shoots First One of Lucas' most controversial changes to the original trilogy was having Greedo shoot first, only for Han to dodge his shot and kill him anyway. The Disney+ 4K version of A New Hope provides the most compelling evidence that this change will never be reversed, as Greedo now says "Maclunkey!" just before he fires. This change was made by Lucas himself before he sold Lucasfilm, giving Greedo the final word and the first shot.
5 Ian McDiarmid As Palpatine In The Empire Strike Back Another original trilogy change that will certainly never be revered is Ian McDiarmid as Emperor Palpatine in The Empire Strikes Back. Palpatine looked and sounded very different in the theatrical cut, so Lucas replaced this version with Ian McDiarmid for the 2004 DVD release, making Palpatine consistent in the original trilogy.
