Trevor Rabin talks 'Owner of a Lonely Heart,' triumphant return with 'Rio,' his first vocal album in 34 yearsVIEW ALL PHOTOS
Named after his's granddaughter, "Rio" proves that Rabin is still force in the modern music scene that sees musical idols being plucked from a television show. And aside from using drummers Lou Molino and Vinnie Colaiuta, Dante Marchi and Liz Constantine to sing back up on two songs, and Charlie Bisharat on violins, Rabin played all the music on the album himself.But why wait 34 years in between vocal albums? Rabin has quick answer for that.
I initially didn't do anything with the song because I thought it's pretty crass. This horrible incident happens and suddenly you're commercially trying to exploit something, so I didn't do it. But now, I feel it's it was the right time to complete this song. It was a song that I needed to finish. It’s dedicated to family and friends who lost loved ones on that fateful day.
I mean when The interesting things is I'd be out to dinner with my wife and she's say 'you're not listening to me.' And I'd say 'what?' And she'd ask me if I wanted a piece of paper," he said. "I mean there were pieces of manuscripts all over the house and eventually I was like I've got to put this together. So during COVID-19, I did a film and then I did the National Treasure series for Jerry Bruckheimer.
Rabin's tenure with Yes has some auspicious beginnings, with a set of demo tapes he thought were to be for a new solo album. Yet nothing materialized in the form of a record deal from any of the major labels. Nothing but maybe a rejection letter from the legendary label chief at Arista Records Clive Davis.
Those demos would be reworked and retooled, with producer Trevor Horn and the late Bob Ludwig, who was a masterful engineer and Rabin says he really put his fingerprints on that album. The album's first single, "Owner of a Lonely Heart" was an immediate success and reached No. 1 in January 1983 and catapulted the "90125" to triple platinum status, making it the biggest selling album in the band's history.
Rabin said although the song went through several evolutions, he's happy it was still able to maintain the essence from his demo. After leaving Yes in 1994, Rabin became a highly in-demand film composer, penning scores for blockbusters that include Con Air, Remember the Titans, Armageddon, National Treasure and Glory Road. Since 1996, Rabin has scored over 40 films and won countless honors for his work, including 11 BMI Awards.Rabin was born in Johannesburg, South Africa and grew up in the shadow of apartheid that was the governmental racial segregation of the whites and the black people.
