The Biden administration has allocated $700 million in the proposed fiscal year 2024 budget for the Gateway rail tunnel project.
That and funding for other transit projects across the country were announced on a Zoom press conference with White House Infrastructure Coordinator Mitch Landrieu, U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Federal Transit Administration Administrator Nuria Fernandez. They outlined thepresident’s budget recommendation to Congress.
Buttigieg highlighted the Hudson River tunnels as a connection so important to the community and Amtrak, if it became unavailable, the impact would be felt “as far away as the Midwest.” While she couldn’t say when a full funding grant agreement for Gateway could be reached, Fernandez said the “project sponsors are doing all the right things” toward that goal.
