What 30 days of intermittent fasting looks like:

Food has always had a certain power over me.I eat because something tastes good or smells great.I eat because the clock says it’s time for a meal.As an adult I have often felt powerless to control my eating in the face of what has seemed like my slowing metabolism and growing appetite. I put on weight throughout my 20s and was extremely obese by my 30s. At 41, with a diet and exercise plan, I did lose 100 pounds. It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done.

When I heard about intermittent fasting a few months ago, I was intrigued. My relationship with food has long felt so unhealthy that it seemed impossible to think I could go a few hours without eating – much less an entire day. But I do love a challenge. So, I decided to try it for a month. I opted for alternate-day fasting, which meant I could eat for a 12-hour period of my choosing before fasting for 36 hours and then starting the cycle again.9 am – 9 pm: Eat breakfast, lunch, dinner and a snack, aiming for 2,000 calories a day.I wasn’t sure I would be able to sustain this schedule for even one day since it involved going a full day and two sleeps with no food – over and over again. But I actually stuck with it for the entire month.

I finished this experiment a couple of months ago, and while I have no plans to do this again long-term, I do now occasionally reduce the amount of food I eat on any given day or fast for a half to a whole day. Truthfully, I’m still trying to find a happy balance. But I have learned that I have more power over food than I used to think. In fact, it’s really not about the food at all. It’s about my relationship with food and for the first time in my life, I think I’m actually in the process of repairing that., where he shares his weight loss efforts and his daughter’s journey with Type 1 Diabetes.
