Lethal Weapon 5 has a lot to learn from Fox's short-lived attempt to turn the Lethal Weapon franchise into a family-friendly TV show in 2016.

While Lethal Weapon’s short-lived TV revival didn’t last more than 3 seasons, Lethal Weapon 5 could learn a lot from the failure of the spinoff. The Lethal Weapon franchise might be as old as its taciturn hero Roger Murtaugh, but the series still refuses to die. According to Mel Gibson, filming will commence on the fifth and final Lethal Weapon movie in 2023, with the actor directing the belated sequel as well as returning to the role of Martin Riggs.

While Wayans and Crawford had their fans, Danny Glover and Mil Gibson’s legendary chemistry in the original Lethal Weapon movies remains unparalleled. Lethal Weapon 5 without Riggs and Murtaugh’s original actors would be unthinkable, which is why it is reassuring to see Gibson take on directing duties.

This was toned down in the later sequels which, like the TV series, focused more on the buddy comedy aspect of Riggs and Murtaugh’s partnership than the criminals they attempted to take down. This left both the later movies and the TV show feeling anodyne and harmless in comparison to the gritty, brutal early movies.
