A 57-year-old woman has been arrested and charged with killing her 3-year-old grandson after she flung him on the bathroom floor and wall, Denton police said.
Angela Downing was booked in the Denton County jail Tuesday on a murder charge after she confessed to severely injuring the child, who was declared brain dead on Saturday, according to jail records. It is unclear if she has an attorney. Child Protective Services notified Denton police on Jan. 18 about a boy being treated at a local hospital. Downing, who was his legal guardian, had told medical staff at the hospital that he had accidentally fallen down a flight of stairs.
However, later in an interview with detectives, Downing admitted to “forcefully throwing the child onto the bathroom floor and against a wall,” Denton police said in aand swelling in the brain. Doctors later declared him brain dead, according to police.“This is a tragic reminder of how devastating child abuse can be, and how the relationship between suspect and victim can vary,” the police department said in the news release.
