Matchup between Pac-12 team and ACC teams has potential to follow SDCCU Holiday Bowl tradition for high-scoring affair in game’s Petco Park debut
The 43rd annual San Diego County Credit Union Holiday Bowl matches teams from the ACC and Pac-12 conferences for the first time.Holiday Bowl organizers have been trying to get the conferences together for two years, but COVID forced the game to be canceled two months before kickoff in 2020 and five hours before kickoff in 2021.No. 15 Oregon and North Carolina , who are meeting for the first time, bring to town two of the country’s most potent offenses.
Maye has several weapons at his disposal, though the Tar Heels will be without junior wide receiver Josh Downs , who opted out of the game and declared for the 2023 NFL Draft. Nix also rushed for 504 yards and 14 TDs — the most among FBS quarterbacks — though he was limited late in the season by a right foot injury that has healed since the regular season ended.
Nix was protected by a pair of Pac-12 first-team selections — left tackle T.J. Bass and center Alex Forsyth — one reason he was sacked only four times this season. Oregon OC Kenny Dillingham was hired as Arizona State’s new head coach. Dillingham has been replaced with Will Stein, who had been OC at UTSA.
Brown has hired Auburn’s Chip Lindsey as his OC, although Lindsey won’t step in until after the bowl game.As if the offenses needed more of an advantage, there also is this: Both defenses will be significantly depleted by injuries, transfers and opt-outs.
