Have you ever wondered if we could build some of the most iconic technology seen in the 1986 sci-fi masterpiece "Aliens?"Not only is it gripping as a story, but the technology doesn't, on the surface, seem too "futuristic" compared to today.Released in 1986 and directed by James Cameron, "Aliens" is the second offering from one of the most popular science fiction franchises ever.

Information is sent to a miniature video display attached to the operator's helmet, who can manually override the chosen target by moving the gun to find a new one. The use of IR to detect heat signatures is nothing new today, and it wouldn't be out of the question to develop tracking systems based on this, but building a method of moving the gun automatically might be tricky.

Radar, sonar, IR sensors, ultrasonic sensors, etc., have been used for many years and work on the same basic premise as the M314 . However, most of these systems are too large to be used as handheld devices and would struggle to perform the level of precision seen in the films, especially in a confined space like a building. These detectors emit low-power radio waves that form a mesh-like detection field that can penetrate through walls and other obstructions.

Seriously cool, but have we got anything close today? In short, yes. As we discussed above, like the "Smartgun," there are weapon systems commonly used on warships or trailers/platforms mounted today that could provide a similar function. While things like "Phalanx" CIWS are far too bulky to be manipulated by humans, smaller systems akin to the sentry gun exist.. A machine gun robot, little is known about its technical details.
