DeMeco Ryans is wise to be 'picky' about the Denver and Houston jobs.
' second-year defensive coordinator and perhaps the hottest first-time coach on the market this winter, appears to have taken that to heart. He's extremely wise to have done so.
The Houston Texans — where Ryans was a star linebacker for six years — and Denver Broncos have requested interviews with Ryans, according to multiple reports. The question, though, is if the interest is mutual. On Black Monday,"with financial security and stability for his reputation and in the team he’s working for, Ryans can afford to be picky, and many in the industry expect he will be.
This isn't just talk. Ryans has already proved once that he'll spurn a team with a head coach opening, with the Minnesota Vikings last winter. He might be smart to do the same this winter, at least with Denver and Houston. No money is worse money, at least for a coach, than the McNair family's. For two straight offseasons, it seemed like the Texans — possibly the most toxic organization in the league if Dan Snyder sells his team — hired Black coaches for the express purpose of saddling them with a crappy roster and firing them a year later. That's exactly what happened to David Culley and Lovie Smith, who didn't have the wealth of options that Ryans does.
The case of Smith is particularly egregious. Last offseason, Houston was on the verge of hiring Josh McCown, a white former NFL quarterback who had never coached above the high school level, when Brian Flores sued the NFL and several teams, alleging systemic racism in head coach hiring.
