For 49ers quarterbacks, winning games has been one thing. Winning over the hard-to-please Shanahan has been something else.
Which brings us to the 49ers’ biggest question entering the season: Is Purdy truly Shanahan’s one and only? Will he meet the head coach’s famously high standards? Will he make him forget about Cousins?Purdy doesn’t appear to have the fatal flaws Shanahan’s exes had.
But he doesn’t seem to have Garoppolo’s unresponsiveness. The 49ers were impressed by how closely Purdy worked with them during his recovery from elbow surgery this offseason and how quickly he returned to action. Purdy also has a Cousins-like story. Both initially began in the shadow of a much more highly drafted quarterback. Robert Griffin III was the No. 2 pick the same year Washington drafted Cousins in the fourth round. The 49ers took Lance No. 3 a year before drafting Purdy with the last pick.
