The whale was found dead and covered in gashes on Saturday. Officials said the cause of its death is being evaluated.
A 40-foot sperm whale was found dead along the Oregon coast on Saturday, after its body washed ashore on a stretch of beach at Fort Stevens State Park, officials said.
"[H]owever, it is unclear if this strike occurred before or after death," the aquarium said in its Facebook post."A necropsy will be scheduled later in the week to take a closer look at this." "So the presence of the sperm whale at this time of year is somewhat unusual but we have had sperm whale strandings in winter before," Milstein explained, adding,"Sperm whales are the third most common species of whale to strand in Oregon, after gray whales and humpback whales."

Officials: Whale found dead in NJ likely struck by vesselBRIGANTINE, N.J. (AP) — Marine animal welfare officials say the most recent whale found dead on a New Jersey shoreline had apparently been struck by a vessel. The Marine Mammal Stranding Center said Sunday that preliminary results of a necropsy on the humpback whale that washed up Thursday on the North End Natural Area in Brigantine indicates that the animal had “blunt trauma injuries consistent with those from a vessel strike.”
