Four people have been killed and dozens wounded in election-related violence on the day of Turkey's municipal ballots.the four deaths on Sunday afternoon, while Turkish media reported numerous violent incidents, including several stabbings, as voters cast their ballots for mayors and city councils.

The election was held amid Turkey's first recession in a decade. Soaring food prices in particular have fueled discontent with the government, leading to unexpectedly close races in Turkey's largest cities. Polls predict that President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's ruling Justice and Development Party Erdoğan, whose conservative movement has ruled the two cities for nearly a quarter century, has cast the election as a matter of"survival.

Two members of Saadet, a small conservative opposition party, died in an altercation at a polling station in the eastern province of Malatya. Saadet chairman Temel KaramollaoğluAs of late afternoon on Sunday, the interior ministry had not provided further information on the other two deaths, saying only that they had occurred before polling stations opened.
