now making the rounds on the festival circuit, we asked Cummings to walk us through some of his work.
Cummings spotted this couple in Shaw in 1995. “I saw them walking and knew it would be good,” he says. What’s their story? The photographer doesn’t know. “I didn’t ask their names—I was just taking pictures of what I liked.” Cummings saw these men selling papers in Northeast DC. They turned down his request to take their photo, so he went and got his portfolio to show them. They ended up saying yes.
A fortuneteller in New Orleans in 1998. “You don’t create a scene,” Cummings says. “You find it and you capture it.”
