30 years after 'Fab Five,' Steve Fisher reflects on his iconic Michigan teams
Michigan's famous early 1990s"Fab Five" team of Jimmy King, Juwan Howard, Chris Webber, Jalen Rose and Ray Jackson left an indelible imprint on college basketball.Many moons ago, before he was the architect of San Diego State’s revival, Steve Fisher was a staple at the Final Four in arguably the most famous chapter of his basketball life.
Fisher and then-assistant Brian Dutcher, now San Diego State’s head coach, put together the nation’s top recruiting class in 1991, getting Chris Webber, Jalen Rose, Juwan Howard, Jimmy King and Ray Jackson to come to Michigan. With Fab Five hype at its peak the following season, Michigan returned to the championship game before suffering a crushing loss to North Carolina that was sealed in the final seconds when Webber infamously called a timeout his team didn’t have.
“The Fab Five, they created a new culture for college basketball in a lot of ways,” Fisher said during Friday’s Final Four practices at NRG Stadium. “And it wasn’t just the baggy shorts, the black socks and the bald heads. It was the fact that a group of five individuals who were all highly, highly touted formed a team and said we’ll give of ourselves to have success.
