For Sophia Celentano, a weekly airplane 'super-commute' is better than paying three months of New York rent on an intern’s salary. Here's how she makes it work.
Her alarm goes off at 3:30 am, reminding the 21-year-old that she has less than an hour to start driving to Charleston International Airport — otherwise, she'll miss her flight to the office.
For Celentano, commuting four-plus hours by plane weekly was a much easier pill to swallow than paying New York rent for three months on an intern's salary. Even some college students are on board. "I really wanted to prioritize my happiness and well-being this summer, and to do that, I wanted to mostly be in Charleston with my family," says Celentano.A hassle worth $2,000 in savings
All in all, Celentano estimates she would spend a minimum of $4,250 to live and work near Ogilvy Health's office between June and August, if she was lucky enough to find an apartment for less than $1,000 per month. Every Wednesday at 6 a.m., she boards a $27 departing flight, according to receipts reviewed by CNBC Make It. Her return flight at 9 p.m. costs about $60. She packs breakfast and dinner in her work bag to save money.
