Honda’s new 315-hp hot hatch put down decent acceleration times, but they could be better.
, the 2023 Civic Type R hit 60 mph in 5.3 seconds and cleared the quarter-mile mark in 13.9 seconds at 104.2 mph. Decent times, to be sure, but we can't shake the feeling it could do better. The outgoing 306-hp Type R was finicky to launch, and the new model, with an additional 9 horsepower, hasn't made this any easier.
The main culprit? The engine, which redlines at 7,000 rpm, is electronically limited to 3,400 rpm when the car is at a standstill. If you try to launch the Type R with your right foot flat and the tach needle pinned against that low ceiling, the limiter cuts power as the Type R pulls off the line. It's quicker to stomp the throttle and release the clutch as the revs rise, timing everything just right to catch the engine before it runs into the 3,400-rpm governor.
As of this writing, Honda hasn't yet claimed a 0-60-mph time of its own, but we have plenty of test data from the previous-generation 306-hp Type R for a target. In our quickest test of that car,
