Eugene Wells, 27, and Salah Mahdi, 29, each of Akron, both were sentenced Tuesday to life in prison for slayings in 2018 and 2019.
CLEVELAND, Ohio — Two Akron men, convicted of separate slayings that occurred in 2018 and 2019, were sentenced Tuesday to life in prison, Summit County Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh said.
Eugene Wells, 27, pleaded guilty earlier this month to two counts of murder, felonious assault, and having weapons under disability for the 2019 shooting death of 23-year-old Walter Matthews III. Wells will be eligible for parole after serving 18 years. Salah Mahdi, 29, pleaded guilty on Nov. 1 to aggravated murder, murder and having a weapon under disability for the 2018 murder of William Pickett. Mahdi will be eligible for parole after serving 28 years.
According to prosecutors, on June 3, 2019, Matthews left at a store on West South Street and Princeton Avenue with his girlfriend when Wells confronted Matthews and started a fight. Wells pulled out a gun and shot Matthews several times.Pickett, 35, was shot multiple times in the torso at John’s Barbershop in the 200 block of East Cuyahoga Falls Avenue in August 2018. A second person was also shot but survived. Mahdi was arrested in December of 2019.
