Two of San Pedro’s favorite legacy restaurants announced closures this summer — but both are being eyed to reopen under new operators.The Whale and Ale English Pub, on Seventh Street, and Babouch Moroccan Restaurant, on Gaffey Street, have served patrons for decades and have loyal followings as two of San Pedro’s dining favorites.
The Babouch family owners announced earlier this month that the popular San Pedro restaurant will close in August. “I can state definitively that the Whale and Ale will reopen as a restaurant/bar/community center,” Klaus posted two weeks ago. “It is simply on a brief hiatus and will be back soon — and better than ever. I can only add that the Whale and Ale will be closed for as short a time as possible while we identify new operators for the business and there are already promising applicants.”
But a week after the pair were handed the keys in 2020, they were met with a statewide and county health order in when a winter coronavirus surge hit, according to a “We loved the Whale and Ale; it was a dream location. customers were all great,” he said. “It all came down to timing.” While the end of the COVID-19 pandemic era was a boon to returning in-person business, she said in a June 19 telephone interview, prices have risen for restaurant owners — and patrons — as costs for supplies, food, produce and labor have gone up.
