While black bears are usually not aggressive, they’re not typically out looking for food in winter. But some experts have said that unusually warm winter days have prompted New Jersey's bear population to explore for food.
So how do you deter bears from your yard and protect your pets?
“Never feed or approach a bear. Remain calm if you encounter a bear,” said DEP spokesman Larry Hajna. “Do not run from it.” “Unfortunately, bears get quite comfortable around people because they’re gaining access to high-calorie diets,” Titchener said. Lt. John Lamon of the Sparta Police Department said homeowners determined to keep bears off their property should also install stockade fences that the bear can’t see through and avoid putting garbage out at night.
The woman whose dog was killed on Jan. 3 knew there were bears in the area, Lamon said. “But she probably just didn’t think about it when she opened that door and her dogs went out,” he said. The NJDEP advises people who encounter bears to make their presence known by “speaking in an assertive voice, singing, clapping your hands or making other noises.” If a bear gets into your home, make sure the animal has an escape route by propping open all doors, Hajna said.
