Rachael VanWormer is a playwright, performer, and the associate artistic director of Write Out Loud; its annual TwainFest is Aug. 19.
VanWormer, 38, is also a playwright and performer living in San Diego’s Mount Hope neighborhood with her husband, Brian, and their dogs, Boris and Roberta. She took some time to talk about the festival, loving her work, and the joys of living in her neighborhood.Write Out Loud is hosting its annual TwainFest this week, celebrating 19th century American literature, culture and history. Tell us a bit about the vision for this year’s festival.
What is your approach in thinking about and putting together what the final bilingual program will look like, from year to year?For bilingual programs, specifically, I read all of the material I’m considering in Spanish first, then work on finding a balance to ensure that the language of origin is as present as possible while the basic plot and characters can be understood by the majority of our audience, which are English speaking.
