, 5.2 percent of children lived in poverty in 2021, down 9.7 percent from 2020—one of the lowest rates on record. The reason for this historic low? Many economists point to the expanded child tax credit which was increased from $2,000 to $3,600 per child under 6 following the pandemic.
Unfortunately, this life-saving credit expansion expired earlier this year after the rejection of the Build Back Better act. Now, thousands of families are left in a lurch and child poverty rates are on the rise again. Although things may seem bleak among tax credit and paid family leave rollbacks, several states are stepping in to support families.
