As far as chilling careers go,certainly make the cut. While the job, which pays an average $46,084 annually, involves constantly being around death, it does have its rewards. “You touch so many people’s lives in such an infinite way,” says John Wenig, spokesperson for theand funeral director of Wisconsin-based Wenig Funeral Homes. “You know that at the end of serving a family after a funeral, you truly made a difference.
What compels people to enter this profession? For some it’s about taking their place in the family business. For others, like Wenig, it’s a calling. After losing his father as a teenager and his eldest son as a young man, he found himself drawn to the field. “Having experienced that really ignited my interest,” he says. “I felt I had something I could pass on.
Of the many characteristics needed to be a funeral director, flexibility, patience and a willingness to serve are at the top of the list. Death knows no hours or holidays, so a funeral director must be ready to work at the drop of a hat. “Your schedule belongs to your community,” Wenig says.“You need to be willing to serve people who are often faced with the most difficult days of their lives.”
