“I want to make sure these officers are never forgotten.”
over the phone on November 14, Zechariah Cartledge ran three miles to honor the lives of three police officers.
On each mile he ran around his neighborhood in Winter Springs, Florida, Cartledge dedicated the effort to a 9/11 first responder. Mile 1 was for Mark Natale, mile 2 was for Harry Valentin, and mile 3 was in honor of William Farley. In 2018, the former New York City Police Department officers died from cancer linked to the toxic dust and smoke from Ground Zero.
As of his Thursday night run, Cartledge has finished 298 miles so far this year in his mission to honor first responders who have died in the last two years. While he wasn’t pleased with his three-mile time of 22 minutes, the 11-year-old knew pace was secondary to the tribute.. “I’ll keep training hard until I can get back into my record times, but hopefully the families are touched by it.”
