'I was nervous, I felt I had no experience, I was scared, I eventually realized I was on the asexual scale — lots of reasons. But the biggest reason for not having sex in college is because of my future.'
It's with these numbers in mind that I took to Twitter to see if anyone wanted to write an essay about their own choice not to have sex in college forwas overwhelming — I got more than 100 emails, countless Twitter DMs, and lots of thread responses, all from people who wanted to share why they didn't do it in college. Of course, there's no shame in having sex in college, or any other time — everyone's choices should be respected as long as they're consensual.
"I knew that when I grew older I would have lots of memories from college, and I didn't want those memories to include boys that I didn't really care about, or didn't care about me. I knew I would want to look back at college with no regrets, and having sex when I didn't want to would've been something I regretted for the rest of my life.
"Truthfully, I wasn’t sure if sex was considered 'sinful,' and though my religious beliefs at that time were playing a factor, it wasn’t enough to be the mainstay of why I still chose not to. The biggest reason I didn’t go for it was because I just hadn’t found a person I trusted enough to do it with. I wasn’t sure how sex would impact me, and knew very easily it could be a very casual experience with no giant repercussions on me emotionally or otherwise.
