Duke Regan would avoid conversations about his mother, Dale. They tended to stray into losing her and how they lost her. But lately he’s been more open to sharing stories. And he figures the anniversary of her death is a good day to do that.
For the longest time, Duke avoided conversations about his mother. Even if well-intentioned, conversations invariably strayed into losing her and how they lost her, instead of being about all the things that made them love and admire her.
So as this March 6 approached, her youngest son had a conversation about his mother — one that wasn’t about reliving that one day in 2012, but instead was about revisiting many other days. “If you got some sort of outdoor toy on Christmas morning, you were on the baseball field that afternoon,” he said. “The school had such a central role in our life as a family. She loved that place.”Regan, who was 63 when she was killed, had been at the private school since 1978 after teaching at public Englewood High School. A Jacksonville native, she began as an English literature teacher at Episcopal, then moved into administration, becoming its head in 2006.
