The story of Star Wars continued long after the original trilogy ended, with 10 iconic characters following different paths in canon and Legends.
The original Star Wars trilogy may have ended with Return of the Jedi, but its characters continued their adventures long afterward in both canon and Legends, meeting different fates in each continuity. Many of these characters' roles and core attributes remained the same in both timelines, but there are several notable differences as well.
9 Leia Organa Like her brother Luke, Leia Organa's story in canon has much in common with Legends, with her final fate being remarkably different in each continuity. Leia married Han Solo in canon shortly after the Battle of Endor, and their son Ben was born a year later. Although Leia completed her Jedi training with Luke, she committed her life to serving in the New Republic Senate.
7 Chewbacca Chewbacca's fate was tragic in Legends, but he was one of the few original trilogy heroes to survive Kylo Ren in canon. After his home planet of Kashyyyk was liberated from the Empire and Han assured him that his life debt had long been paid, Chewbacca returned to a peaceful life with his fellow Wookiees. Years later, Chewbacca decided to join Han once again when his old friend returned to smuggling, with the two remaining a team until Han's death at the hand of Kylo Ren.
5 R2-D2 R2-D2 also served a similar role in canon and Legends, but his story in the latter continued much farther beyond the original trilogy. Luke traveled with R2-D2 on their adventures, with the droid playing a major role in helping him rebuild the Jedi. However, R2-D2 played a smaller role in the sequels, spending several years in low-power mode as he searched his vast memory for the location of the first Jedi Temple.
