Indiana Jones brought the campy genre of treasure-hunting action-adventure into the limelight, and several films have done a great job following suit.
Indiana Jones' tried and true formula has made it a common franchise to be copied—but some imitators are worth a watch all on their own. Something about treasure hunting in the jungle or desert-like settings gets audiences' blood pumping, and this is part of what has made Indiana Jones successful. Add in the suave, brainy adventurer, a thrilling romance, and some classically terrible villains, and it seems this formula is a shoo-in for Hollywood.
9 The Mummy The first The Mummy movie came out just over a decade after the first Indiana Jones and seemed to have been cut from a similar cloth. The American hero, Rick O'Connell, had that same charismatic appeal as Indy, making him an easy heartthrob to cheer for. However, instead of making Rick the brainy professor as well as a rugged adventurer, this other aspect of Indiana Jones' character was given to Evelyn—the love interest.
5 Congo Congo, released in 1995, combined the treasure hunting of Indiana Jones with the killer wildlife of Jurassic Park. This is no surprise since it was based on the 1980 novel of the same name by Michael Crichton, the author of the Jurassic Park books. Entertaining and a little funny, Congo certainly has all the campy features of Indiana Jones, though it didn't pull it off quite so successfully.
